According to the Canadian Press, golf legend Jack Nicklaus dropped the puck for the ceremonial faceoff at Nationwide Arena in Columbus on Friday evening, prior to the Calgary Flames hockey game against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Nicklaus, a native of Upper Arlington, Ohio, is in nearby Dublin, Ohio this weekend for the Presidents Cup. It is the prestigious golf tournament every two years that has the best 12 golfers from the United States against the best 12 golfers from the world outside of Europe.

Nicklaus has been the winning American captain on two occasions--in 2005 in Gainesville, Virginia and in 2007 in Montreal. As a player, Nicklaus is the best ever. From 1962-1986, the Golden Bear has won a record 18 major titles.

At the present time the United States leads the International squad 6.5 to 5.5 after the conclusion of the second session on Saturday morning. The Presidents Cup has another Calgary connection because International team player Graham DeLaet of Weyburn, Saskatchewan donated $1,000 to southern Alberta flood victims this past year for every birdie he got at the Travelers Championship in Hartford.
