Viewers got an eyeful and earful as they tuned in to watch “American Idol” on Jan. 23. According to a Jan. 24 Daily Mail report, there was another blow up with the judges and this time it was not just between Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj.
The judges were reportedly on edge after a long day of auditions in North Carolina and an argument erupted among the four-judge panel after the usually serene judge Keith Urban got irritated by a contestant’s comments about country music.
“Where do you see yourself as a singer?” Urban asked a hopeful contestant. “I did the country thing so maybe a soulful county thing is what I have been doing,” she said responded. “I always get thrown when people say they have ‘done the county thing.’ it’s like saying you did the brain surgeon thing. Either you are a brain surgeon or you’re not,” Urban retorted.
“When you said you did the county thing you annoyed Keith,” Carey told the contestant, giving her a “yes.” As the other judges debated the best genre for the contestant, an annoyed Minaj asked her fellow judges Carey and Jackson why they were picking on the contestant when they all make comments about “everybody in popular music all day,” she quipped.
“Oh really, is that what I do?” asked Carey. “I’m trying to help her as opposed to just talking about her outfit,” she said. “I’m just trying to help you, a little bit, 30 years. Insight,” added Jackson, mentioning his longevity and industry experience.
This did not calm down an already irate Minaj. “Oh, you’re right. I’m sorry I can’t help her. Maybe I should just get off the [bleeping] panel,” she said as she made a dramatic exit. “Let me off the panel,” she said on her way out.
“That was my move. I was gonna do that the next time she bagged on me,” quipped Carey. Minaj responded with a “Shut the [bleep] up. Finish the show. I’m done.”
The judges went ahead and finished the show.
