Nicki Minaj explains VMA wardrobe mishap, says she didn't have time to zip dress

Nicki Minaj was snakeless – and, apparently, zipperless-- at the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards. In the middle of her show-opening team up with fellow music divas Jessie J and Ariana Grande for the song “Bang Bang,” the former “American Idol” judge was forced to hold the front of her dress closed after an apparent wardrobe mishap.

While some viewers seemed confused as to why Minaj was suddenly clutching the front of her belly baring dress, on Monday, E! News reported that the 31-year-old rapper confirmed the malfunction backstage after the show. Minaj explained to press room reporters, "You all know I had a wardrobe malfunction…We ran out of time getting the dress zipped up."

Nicki Minaj seemed to have taken a page from Miley Cyrus’s VMA handbook for her raunchy performance, which included bumping, grinding, and a whole lot of booty shaking. The rapper initially took the stage in a skimpy green bikini before changing into a tight LBD that had a super plunging neckline. And, it seems, a faulty zipper.

The singer’s performance, which included a solo stint on her hit “Anaconda,” created buzz before it even started. Over the weekend, one of the rapper’s backup dancers was bitten by a snake during rehearsals. According to Rolling Stone, the six-foot-long non venomous boa constrictor named Rocky bit the inside of the dancer's left arm while Minaj and her dancers were rehearsing their performance of "Anaconda." The incident occurred while the dancer had the snake draped around her shoulders, and Minaj’s people ultimately decided not to use the slithering 15-year showbiz veteran for the live performance.

Later in the show, Minaj took the stage with Usher for the song “She Came to Give It To You."
