Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey’s country brawl on ‘American Idol’ (Video)

There was a good old ‘country brawl’ last night on “American Idol.” The huge blow up that happened during the Charlotte, NC auditions between Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey was finally aired. It turned out to be a little different than viewers might have expected. E Online posted some details on Jan. 23 of all the happenings on the Fox reality competition.

It all started when aspiring singer Summer Cunningham came out to sing her version of “Lean on Me.” She did a great job but then her offhand comment that she made saying that she had already done the ‘country thing’ sparked Keith Urban to take offense. She then acknowledged that she was more of a soulful country artist.

“That’s like saying, ‘I did the brain surgeon thing,’” Urban said. “You’re either a brain surgeon or you’re not.”

Both Mariah Carey and Randy Jackson started in on whether Summer really should be a country artist, as Randy told her that country music is what her voice is best suited for. This seemed like the right time for someone to break into a rendition of “Take Me Home, Country Road.” Both judges seemed to be steering the 20-year-old soulful artist to take that country road ‘to the place she belonged.’ They were going back and forth on the girl’s country roots. What was Ms. Minaj doing all this time? She was sitting quietly while rolling her eyes, fidgeting and looking quite bored with it all, or maybe it was her version of frustration.

Nicki then looked to her fellow judges on her left and asked, "Why are we taking her apart?" She went on to say that they shouldn’t be trying to steer the contestants into lying just to get to Hollywood. This brought a chatter of objections and banter between all four of the judges at the same time. Randy and Mariah insisted that they were just trying to help her, which is what they are there for.

Randy toted something about his ‘thirty year insight’ and Mariah made a jab about caring more about their music than how they dress. It was very hard to hear above all the jibber jabber. Nicki obviously wasn’t very happy to hear how she wasn’t ‘helping’ the singers. This prompted her to say,"I'm done," as she stormed off the set using a few choice words along the way.

Mariah seemed amused by the whole thing saying, "That was my move. I was going to do that the next time she ragged on me."

So, there you have it. The whole thing was basically started by country boy Keith Urban and ended with Nicki Minaj mad at the whole crew. Production was shut down for the day, everyone cooled off, and the next day proved to be a success. At least Summer Cunningham made it through to Hollywood after all of that.

What are your thoughts on this on screen feud with Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey? Are you amused or appalled at all the hype on “American Idol?”
