Nicki Minaj is apparently a musician. At the 2012 Grammy Awards last night, she performed her song "Roman Holiday" to what looks like a very strange homage to The Exorcist. (see the video for the entire performance).
However, the entire routine looked more like it owed more to Mel Brooks than to anything else.
And, while the scene isn't exactly something to provoke an official reaction from the Catholic church (they are dealing with more serious problems right now), following the reaction on Twitter leads to some interesting results.
On the one hand, you had Catholics who were offended.
@THEsituWAYtion She openly and blatantly mocked the Catholic faith in her entire performance and with her whole gimmick she showed up in
stephfisher1287 I do not get insulted easily when people make fun of my Catholicbackground. However, Nicki's performance was straight up offensive!
Then you had non-Catholics, who had even stronger views.
DJTAJEVI: I don't even know what to say about the #nickiminaj performance. I'm not even Catholic and it bothered me. #illuminati! Open your eyes!
RomeoValentino: I AM NOT CATHOLIC!!! This right here was.WRONG!!! She's psychotic!!!
However, I think the tweet that sums up the evening is from one StephS_24, who said, "Seriously...whatever message she had for the Catholic faith and who we are....it was just so weird."
If you want a reaction from this column, practicetheory has it correct: "Not watching it but heard on Grammy's was mocking of Catholic church. How daringly brave &controversial.Didn't Madonna do that 80 years ago?"
At the end of the day, whether or not it was offensive, a last part of the internet seems to agree: it was definitely strange.
