Nickelodeon series 'Sam & Cat' on permanent hiatus amid controversy

On Wednesday, April 2 Deadline broke the news that the popular Nickelodeon television comedy "Sam & Cat" has been placed on a permanent hiatus and will end a few episode short of its forty episode first season order. The popular show stars actresses Jennette McCurdy and Ariana Grande as two roommates in Los Angeles who work as babysitters.

The news comes just days after reports of trouble on the set, with McCurdy not attending the Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards, where the show won Favorite TV Show, and Grande won Favorite Actress. The series is a ratings hit for the network, since McCurdy used to star as Sam Puckett on the other Nickelodeon show "iCarly" and Grande starred as Cat Valentine on the series "Victorious."

McCurdy took to her official Twitter account to reveal her reasoning for not attending, mentioning being put in an "unfair situation" and that her mother always taught her to stand up for what's right. The actress later clarified that her decision was not due to how "Nickelodeon treated me" and that she would not elaborate further. The actress has had a tough few months, first losing her mother to cancer and having racy images of herself released on the Internet.

The series had yet to be renewed for a second season, although the first season was upgraded from twenty episodes to forty. In light of recent events, the series will shorten its episodes and filming will wrap early. The entire crew for the series has been let go except for the people working in post production to finish the current episodes. It's highest rated episode brought in nearly five million viewers.

McCurdy has been with Nickelodeon for seven years and Grande has been with the network for four years. McCurdy and Grande are both pursuing other projects, and Grande launched a music career last year to enormous success.
