On Friday, Nick Saban decided to stay at Alabama and re-up his contract with the University. ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit first reported on the multiyear extension between Saban and Alabama. Alabama confirmed the new deal about an hour after the extension was reported. The new contract is worth between $7 and $7.5 million.
Nick Saban released a statement through the university and he reiterated that he’s excited about the future and the prospects of ending his career as the Alabama coach. However, there were various reports of Nick Saban looking elsewhere to take his talents.
With the new deal, all of the focus on Nick Saban’s coaching ability. For Alabama fans, they must be thrilled with status quo. However, if the Crimson Tide run into trouble in a couple games, will this post season get brought up by the fan base.
In side note that’s entirely related, CBSsportsline.com reported that Mack Brown will remain the head coach at Texas. After meeting with the President and AD, the decision was made to keep the UT legend on board for at least one more season.
Hopefully for Alabama, Nick Saban decided to stay with the Crimson Tide before Texas decided to stick with Mack Brown. If that’s not the case, Alabama was second the choice.
Whether the whole process was contentious or not is up for debate. According to Alabama sources, working with agent, Jimmy Sexton, has been “cordial and professional over the years.” We shouldn’t take this as a shot towards the agent at all.
As it stands now, Nick Saban is the highest paid coach in college and the Crimson Tide prepare to keep it that way.
