Nick Foles was as perfect as a coach could ask for on Sunday. Foles threw for 406 yards, no interceptions and tied an NFL record with seven touchdowns in the Philadelphia Eagles’ 49-20 win over the Oakland Raiders. After such an impressive performance, you’d expect to see Foles start at quarterback for the Eagles henceforth, right? Wrong. In a press conference on Monday, head coach Chip Kelly refused to name the Eagles’ long-term starting quarterback.
“It’s going to be based on health, we’ll see,” said Kelly. If throwing more touchdowns than incompletions in a game isn’t good enough to be a starting quarterback in this league, what is? Fellow quarterback Michael Vick sustained a hamstring injury in Week 5 and hasn’t been back to full strength since. Foles also battled injuries for a few games, but made a triumphant return against the Raiders on Sunday. Third-string rookie quarterback Matt Barkley has seen some action in the absence of Foles and Vick, but turned the ball over at an alarming rate in two divisional games.
Injuries are unavoidable in football, coach Kelly seems to be hesitant to name a starting quarterback until one of them is 100 percent healthy. The quarterback conundrum in Philadelphia is a tough choice for the coach, but if Kelley needs any help determining the starter, he can refer to the numbers:
- Nick Foles has yet to turn the ball over for the Eagles, Vick has thrown three interceptions and fumbled twice.
- Vick has scored a total of seven touchdowns in six starts this year, as many as Foles threw for against the Raiders.
- Foles has won three games for the Eagles in 2013; Vick has only managed to win once this year.
The 33-year-old Vick is best suited for Chip Kelly’s offense, Kelly is used to having a mobile quarterback during his college-coaching career at the University of Oregon. Foles is the opposite of a mobile quarterback. Foles has rushed only 12 times this season and seemingly prefers to deliver passes from inside the pocket. More technical than flashy, Foles is doing everything that matters on the NFL stage, win.
Halfway through the season and trailing Dallas by one game in the NFC East, The Philadelphia Eagles are far from out of a division title. Vick’s status for the Eagles next game against the Green Bay Packers is still uncertain, so Kelly may not have much of a choice but to call Foles his starting quarterback, for now at least.
