After downing Nicholls State by the score of 4-0 on Saturday evening, the Houston Cougars came back on Sunday, February 16, 2014 and swept the three-game opening weekend series by downing the Colonels 3-2 at Cougar Field in Houston, Texas.
They added their second run in the third inning when left fielder Michael Pyeatt’s sacrifice bunt scored Ratcliff from third.
Houston added their third run of the game in the fourth inning when Vidales singles to center field, allowing center fielder Ashford Fulmer to score.
The Colonels scored two runs in the eighth inning and were threatening to tie the score when Cougar relief pitcher Bubba Maxwell shut down the inning.
Houston starting pitcher Jared West, pitching seven innings of one-hit baseball, received the win.
Tyler Ford, who saw 1.1 innings in relief, got the save.
For Nicholls State, Borne was credited with the loss, pitching 3.2 innings and giving up seven hits and three runs, all of them earned.
Houston’s bats stayed hot, with Vidales going 3-for-5 at the plate, with one run and one RBI, and Ratcliff hitting 2-for-3 with one run.
Team wise, the Cougars were 11-for-34.
Houston will now have three days to rest and prepare for their next game before facing former Conference USA and cross-town rival Rice on Wednesday, February 19 at Reckling Field; with the first pitch scheduled for 4:30 p.m. CT.
Rice will be coming off a three-game series against #25 Stanford on opening weekend and a Tuesday, February 18 evening game against Texas State.
The Cougars will follow up the single game match-up against Rice with a three-game weekend series against the Michigan Wolverines on February 21-23, 2014.
Game time is set for 6:30 p.m. on Friday (Feb 21) and Saturday (Feb 22) and 11:30 a.m. on Sunday (Feb 23).
