Jazz recording artist Nicolas Bearde is back in town after touring overseas and will be performing this weekend, Friday, January 24, 2104 at Fenix Jazz Supper Club, located at 919 4th St in San Rafael, California. He will be joined by longtime collaborators Deszon Claibourne on drums, Glenn Pearson on keyboards, and Mike Borderlon on the bass.
“It’s always that sense of homecoming and relaxing when I play here, without the attendant issues of travel,” said Bearde.
The renowned jazz vocalist frequently tours, but is always happy to return home to the Bay Area.
“I met my wife in Japan, but she was living in Oakland,” said Bearde. “She was flying for World Airways at the time. I came here to be with her, and discovered this amazing place. I am from Nashville. I moved to Los Angeles for a while and I didn’t really vibe. L.A. is on a whole different scale, but I loved Oakland. I still love it. Oakland is a place where I felt immediately at home. The music scene was so happening here in the Bay Area in the 70s. It was really dynamic. There were national acts like Tower of Power, Santana, and Sly Stone, Buddy Miles and Journey coming out of the Bay Area. The local scene just was as hot as the national acts coming out here.”
He is also performing here in Oakland at a Valentine Lover’s Concert on Saturday, February 15, 2014 at Musically Minded Academy, 5776 Broadway in Oakland.
“Part of the reason we are performing at Musically Minded is to support the academy. They give kids in the area an outlet for studying and performing, and an opportunity to grow up in music and the arts,” said Bearde
“Another purpose of the school is to introduce the students to professional artists who live in Oakland and the rest of the Bay Area” added Darlene Miller of Nic Nac Music.
Youth and arts education are important to Bearde, who is an arts educator.
“I also mentor at Young Arts based in Miami. These kids come from all over the country… and are selected to attend this mentoring scholarship program. They are already artists, and are going to be launched into the upper echelon of the arts. Some of alumni of the program include Kerry Washington of Scandal, Adrian Grenier of Entourage, Nicki Minaj, and Viola Davis of The Help.”
