Don’t be intimidated by the world of online dating. As I noted in my last article, How to Know When it is Time to Find a Relationship Online: Part 2, there are 42 million single people looking for love online. If they can do it, you can, too. Take the “what have I got to lose?” approach, and go for it. As I also mentioned in my last article, there are many free online dating sites that you can try out, get your feet wet, hone your profile, and chat with some like-minded singles.
But, as a friend of mine recently wrote to me, “I belong to two free sites. I think I’ll try a pay site next, as I think people have a more serious intent.”
Free vs. Paid Sites
Maybe my friend has a point. Although the free dating sites might a be a great place to start, once you have spent some time on those, you may decide you want to narrow your search criteria. It is possible that the paid sites do offer more people with a “more serious intent” because, after all, if you are paying for a membership to an online dating site, then you must be pretty serious about accomplishing your goal of finding that special someone – so much so, that you are willing to fork over a membership fee.
Niche Dating Websites
On the other hand, there are both free and paid dating sites for a specific niche of people as well. Depending on what you are looking for, you could choose an online dating site that only connects you to other singles who ride horses, or only people who like to dance, or only people over the age of 55. (Incidentally, senior singles are quickly becoming the fastest growing group of online daters in the country!)
For Love or Money? Choose Love
The largest online dating site that very specifically caters to people who have successful careers and are financially stable is MillionaireMatch.com. This site is specifically geared toward successful singles who “want to connect with, date, and marry successful and attractive people.” This very specific niche of people can help you weed out those that are not in your financial bracket, or who do not share your level of professional success. As the folks at MillionaireMatch.com also note, “If you are looking for a sugar daddy-type relationship, then MillionaireMatch is not for you.”
When I was in college, my dad used to kiddingly (or not) say to me whenever I mentioned a boy I was interested in, “Remember, it’s just as easy to fall in love with a rich, successful guy as it is to fall in love with a poor one.” And although we used to laugh about it, and I’d tell him I was holding out for a guy who was going to buy me a vintage Corvette Stingray, there is some truth in my dad’s statement.
Today, it is even easier to fall in love with a successful, accomplished, like-minded CEO, professional athlete, or one of the many other entrepreneurs, when you know where to find the rich, successful guys. Apparently, they are online, just like the not-so-rich-guys, looking for love, just like you.
