Niacin is very important for good overall health. Medline Plus writes that niacin is a type of B vitamin which is water-soluble so you need a continuous supply of niacin in your diet. Niacin helps the nerves, digestive system, and skin to function and is also important for converting food to energy. ETH Life reported in a news release on Sept. 30, 2013, "Niacin, the fountain of youth."
Michael Ristow, an ETH-Zurich professor of energy metabolism, has demonstrated that niacin has a life-prolonging effect in roundworms. Ristow found that niacin and its metabolite nicotinamide in the worms’ diet caused them to live for about one tenth longer than they usually do. He has experimentally demonstrated that niacin and nicotinamide take effect via promoting the formation of so-called free radicals. In roundworms these reactive oxygen species were found to prolong life.
This is a controversial opinion because reactive oxygen species are generally considered to be unhealthy. Reactive oxygen species are said by other scientists to damage somatic cells, which is a condition referred to as oxidative stress. Scientists believe that antioxidants, which are found in fruit, vegetables and certain vegetable oils, are capable of neutralizing these free radicals are therefore beneficial to health. Ristow has however said, “The claim that intake of antioxidants, especially in tablet form, promotes any aspect of human health lacks scientific support.”
Ristow believes the health benefits of fruit and vegetables may rather be due to other compounds contained therein, such as so-called polyphenols. Ristow has said, “Fruit and vegetables are healthy, despite the fact that they contain antioxidants.” He is convinced that small amounts of reactive oxygen species and the oxidative stress which they trigger have a health-promoting impact.
It the position of Ristow that cells cope well with oxidative stress and neutralize it. Because the metabolic pathway initiated by niacin is very similar in roundworms and higher organisms the results of this study may also be of relevance for humans.
