Nia--what is it?

For anyone who is easily bored by their workout routine, is looking for that next new thing, has an injury that they need to workout around, is looking to start that New Year’s resolution, or just wants to try something fun and really well rounded, then Nia might be the activity you’ve been looking for.

What is Nia? Nia is an eclectic blend of yoga, contemporary and tribal-like dance, and martial arts--Aikido, Tae Kwon Do, and Tai Chi. It provides an exhilarating workout which doesn’t put a lot of strain on the joints. Since the workout is as strenuous or light as the individual participant decides to make it, the benefits can vary from moderately relaxing calisthenics to sweating and feeling the cardio burn.

Nia strengthens and tones the muscles, increases flexibility and grace, and gets the heart-a-pumping--if you really get into it. It is also a wonderful way to get used to how your own body moves, so students don’t have to worry about doing the moves exactly like the instructor.

Classes are held at the Lincoln Center Gym Monday, Wednesday, and Friday every week from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm.
