The National Highway Safety Traffic Administration (NHTSA) is conducting a preliminary probe into more than 363,000 2008 Honda Accords following complaints by 28 drivers that the side door airbags deployed when the doors were closed. Two owners suffered injuries as a result.

In the meantime and agency spokesman stated that the NHTSA is “looking into the possible scope of the problems and safety implications,” while the auto manufacturer conducts its own internal investigation. American Honda Motor Co also stated that it will "cooperate with the NHTSA through the investigation process.”

Side air bags were first introduced into cars back in 1995. Since then a 2006 study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety credited them with helping reduce fatalities by protecting passengers’ heads during side collisions by approximately 37% in cars and close to 52% in SUVs. .
