NHL season begins with a full day of televised games

NHL hockey is officially back!

Hockey fans all across the U.S. and Canada will be able to watch NHL hockey all day Saturday, Jan. 19th, as the 2012-13 shortened season gets under way.

There are three games that will open up the NHL season at 3 p.m. ET. (via NHL.com)

To start, at 3 p.m. ET on NBC, the Los Angeles Kings begin their defense of their first 2011/12 Stanley Cup championship when they host the Chicago Blackhawks at Staples Center.

Perhaps one of the most intriguing games this Saturday is the game between the Philadelphia Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins at 3 p.m. ET. This will be a preview of one of the best rivalries in the League, as the game can also be seen on NBC. The Flyers ousted the Penguins in a nasty first-round match-up during the 2011/12 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Meanwhile, the Winnipeg Jets face the Ottawa Senators at 3 p.m. ET as well.

At 5:30 p.m. ET, NHL Network will present "NHL Tonight," which also will be streamed on NHL.com. That program will be followed by the New York Rangers at Boston Bruins on NHLN-US.

Three other games will get under way at 7 p.m. ET, including: an Original Six matchup between the Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs; the defending Eastern Conference champion New Jersey Devils vs. the New York Islanders; and the Washington Capitals vs. the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Jordan Staal makes his debut with the Carolina Hurricanes at 7:30 p.m. ET, when they visit the Florida Panthers.

Three more games begin at 8 p.m. ET, as Jaromir Jagr will lead the Dallas Stars for the first time against the Phoenix Coyotes; the Nashville Predators play host to the Columbus Blue Jackets; and the Detroit Red Wings visit the St. Louis Blues.

Speaking of debuts, Zach Parise and Ryan Suter will put on Minnesota Wild jerseys for the first time when they play host to the young and talented Colorado Avalanche at 9 p.m. ET.

The final game of opening day gets under way at 10 p.m. ET, when the Vancouver Canucks face the Anaheim Ducks.
