Islanders continue to drop like flies this season. It’s incredible that only three players (Bill Guerin, Richard Park, and Mark Streit) have played in all 44 games. Four goalies have been used to this point and soon, a 5th. Injuries to Rick DiPietro (hip, knee, groin, knee again) and Joey MacDonald (groin) have forced the Isles to bring back Wade Dubielewicz (a.k.a ‘Dubie’).
The two sides agreed to a one-way NHL contract for the remainder of the season. Before the deal can become official Dubie must obtain his formal release from Russia’s KHL, then clear NHL waivers. Dubie figures to be the starter for the rest of the season. Its unclear how hurt MacDonald is, but groin injuries tend to linger. Reports have surfaced that DiPietro’s season may in fact be over. Pick up Dubie if you need a goaltender, just don’t expect many wins.
The Rangers have begun contract discussions with the agent for Nikolai Zherdev. Zherdev (in the last year of his contract) would become a restricted free agent without a new deal. The 24 year-old Russian leads the team in points, even though he hasn’t scored in 9 games. Columbus traded the talented winger out of fear they would lose him to Russia’s KHL and get nothing in return. Zherdev sounds happy in New York and hopes to stick around. For more on this story check out Larry Brooks’ article. Zherdev is the top Ranger in fantasy aside from Henrik Lundqvist.
Brendan Shanahan made it official on Wednesday by signing a one-year contract with the Devils for an estimated $800,000. Shanahan joined the team and participated in his first practice on Thursday. It’s already been announced that ‘Shanny’ won’t play Friday night against the Blue Jackets. His status for Saturday’s game against the Islanders has not been ruled out. Another tidbit yet to be disclosed is who Shanahan would play on a line with. Don’t pick him up until that information comes to light.
