NH student joins original Freedom Riders in retracing of 1961 bus rides

According to Susan Adams, Education Manager of NHPTV, Meghan Chandra of Merrimack (currently attending the University of Pennsylvania) joins 39 other college students and some of the original Freedom Riders as they retrace the famous bus rides of 1961 from Washington, DC to New Orleans, LA.  The journey began May 6 and will continue through May 16.

This trip, coordinated by PBS, kicks off a series of commerations of the 50th anniversary of a pivital time in the civil rights movement. The Freedom Riders took a revolutionary step in the battle for civil rights.  From May until November 1961, more than 400 black and white Americans risked their lives, many enduring beatings and imprisonment, for traveling together on buses and trains as they journeyed  through the Deep South.

Ms. Chandra and the other participating students are using social media to share their experiences on the journey.  Visit the American Experience: Freedom Riders page to watch videos, read journal entries, and sign up for updates.
