When Colin Kaepernick won the starting quarterback job for the San Francisco 49ers, it was clear Alex Smith was on his way about. According to NFL.com on Feb. 24, the Alex Smith trade will probably end up being with the Kansas City Chiefs.
This also ties into the rumors of a Matt Cassel release that has started making the rounds this weekend as well.
According to the NFL trade rumors, the Kansas City Chiefs are the team showing the most interest in Smith and word is that a deal is "all but done." If they go ahead and pull the trigger on the Alex Smith trade, they can focus their first round 2013 NFL Draft pick on offensive tackle Luke Joeckel.
The word is that, if the Kansas City Chiefs bring in Smith, he will be their immediate starter and Matt Cassel will end up out the door. They also might draft a backup quarterback in the later rounds.
The addition of Alex Smith might also help the Chiefs convince Dwayne Bowe to stick around, and added to their explosive running back Jamaal Charles, they could surprise a lot of teams in Andy Reid's debut season as their new head coach.
