Opening kickoff is scheduled for tonight at 8:30 p.m. EST (7:30 p.m. CST/6:30 p.m. MST/5:30 p.m. PST) live on NFL Network.
According to NFL Week 15 oddsmakers, Peyton Manning and the Broncos come favored by double-digits in the ATS department.
Currently, most NFL sportsbooks in the world have Denver at -10 versus San Diego [+10] and the OVER/UNDER set at a combined total of 58 points. Straight-up betting lines also value the Broncos [-570 ML] by a bundle over the visiting Chargers [+440 ML] this evening.
Stylistically, this is a matchup that doesn't favor Philip Rivers and the Bolts in too respects, starting with the fact that Denver is 7-0 at home and they’re 3-4 on the road.
Therefore, when it comes to issuing NFL predictions for this game - barring any devastating injuries - it's extremely difficult to imagine an (straight-up) upset will take place this evening.
Head-to-head, Denver supersedes San Diego in the following statistical areas: Points per game, yards gained, yards allowed, Red Zone efficiency and, of course, in special teams. The only two facets of the game that the Chargers surpass the Broncos are in time of possession and penalties.
That pretty much leaves all but one question to be answered: By how many ATS points will the Denver Broncos defeat the San Diego Chargers tonight?
There are many ways to address this free NFL pick issue, and tons of concrete and intangible manners of answering it.
Against the spread, although the Chargers come in with a modest 7-5-1 mark, there are tons of deterrents, even with a double-digit cushion.
For starters, there appears to be inconsistencies from a (week-to-week) power outage standpoint, as San Diego is: 0-5-1 in its last six games after scoring more than 30 points the previous week, 0-5 following a straight-up win of more than 14 points and 1-8-1 following a straight-up win.
That in of itself is a recipe for disaster against Manning and the top-ranked Broncos offense, but there's more data to solidify that notion.
In the case of Denver, this team comes in with an 8-4-1 ATS record this season, and a surmountable amount of against-the-spread data in its favor.
The Broncos are 5-0-1 in their last six versus divisional opponents, 5-0 in their last 5 Thursday night games and a perfect 5-0 in their last 5 games on grass.
