He's already crossed "pro-football MVP", "Dancing with the Stars champion" and "movie star" off of his bucket list. Now, NFL's Hines Ward is ready to "Become One" in 2013's "Ironman World Championship" triathlon, scheduled to take place in Kona, Hawaii on October 12, 2013. For those not in the know, the "Ironman" is the ultimate test of physical and mental strength. The competition consists of swimming for a distance of 2.4 miles in open water, biking 112 miles and running a 26.2 mile marathon, all in under 17 hours. To call the competition "grueling" is an understatement.
Completing the "Ironman" is quite a feat indeed, and Ward does not want to go down in history as "just a football player." While his previous accomplishments are certainly nothing to sneeze at, succeeding at the "Ironman" is one of the most rewarding activities an athlete can pursue, as here is where the potential of the body and mind are fully realized when pushed to their limits. Few activities require the levels of determination and hard work that go into the training for and participation in an "Ironman" competition.
Ward has joined forces with the brand Refuel ("Got chocolate milk?") to launch "Become One", a documentary, reality show-like web-series that will follow Hines (as well as three other everyday athletes) as they train for the big day. These athletes will follow the advice of professional coaches and dietitians over the course of seven months as they prepare for one of the biggest events of their lives.
