According to ABC News on Friday, Chicago Bears wide receiver Brandon Marshall has been fined for wearing green during the game against the New York Giants on Thursday, in an effort to promote awareness for mental illness during Mental Illness Awareness Week.
In 2011 Marshall announced he had been diagnosed with borderline bipolar disorder, after the announcement he started the Brandon Marshall Foundation, which aims to raise awareness for mental illness and help those in need gain access to mental health resources.
What is bipolar disorder?
According to National Alliance on Mental Illness, or NAMI, bipolar disorder is a chronic illness with recurring episodes of mania and depression that can last from one day to months. This mental illness causes unusual and dramatic shifts in mood, energy and the ability to think clearly. Cycles of high (manic) and low (depressive) moods may follow an irregular pattern that differs from the typical ups and downs experienced by most people. The symptoms of bipolar disorder can have a negative impact on a person’s life. Damaged relationships or a decline in job or school performance are potential effects, but positive outcomes are possible.
The NFL has strict uniform guidelines that can mean fines or even expulsion for a player who refuses to wear approved uniforms correctly. However, the NFL agreed that Marshall could play in the green shoes as long as he paid a fine.
Marshall was aware of his fine, and said:
“I’m going to get fined and I’m going to match that [fine], we’re still working on the details to give, really give back to an organization that is doing work in the mental health area.”
The fine, according to TMZ, could easily exceed $10,000.
Marshall was already fined $10,500 last year for wearing orange cleats -- not for any particular cause -- but since last night's stunt would be a repeat offense, the fine could be larger. It's expected to be handed down next week.
Now, TMZ claims he's auctioning them off on buybrandonsshoes.com, with a starting bid of $2,000.
