The Seattle Seahawks and Green Bay Packers played a very contentious game on Friday August 23. What was built up as a showdown between Russell Wilson and Aaron Rodgers turned into a defensive struggle in the first half. It didn’t help matters that Aaron Rodgers only played one possession in his third preseason game. The Seahawks won the game 17-10 over Green Bay.
Russell Wilson ended the game with 11 completions in 17 attempts. Still, it was not his best performance we’ve seen. Wilson added a couple of interceptions, and was under an intense pass rush throughout the game. Russell Wilson finished with 126 passing yards.
On the first possession, Russell Wilson drove his team right down the field with an assortment of throws. The first play, he eluded the pass rush and scampered up the middle for an easy 13 yard run. Opponents must be aware of containing Russell and not just sacking him during the season. A penalty slowed down the Seahawk offense in the red zone, then Russell was sacked on a great play by Clay Matthews. Thus the Seahawks settled for a chip shot field goal after a 12 play drive.
If Russell Wilson was as established as Aaron Rodgers, he may have felt very accomplished on the evening.
Rodgers led the Packers right down the field, but they missed a couple opportunities for a touchdown as well. He was 4-7 passing for 41 yards. Instead of punching the ball into the end zone, Green Bay settled for a Mason Crosby field goal. The 11 play drive was all the work Rodgers needed and he was done for the night.
That’s when the backups took over and Christine Michael was sensational in the second half. Michael carried the ball 11 times for 97 yards and caught a pass for 25 yards. Included in his big night on the ground, Michael scored on a 43 yard run down the right sideline.
Vince Young also received time in the second half and led the Packers on an 11 play 80 yard drive that culminated with a Jonathan Amosa touchdown catch. Vince Young was 6 of 7 for 41 yards and the one touchdown in limited action. Even if there isn’t a spot for Young on this team, he showed himself well while leading the Packers on the scoring drive.
This is the third straight preseason game that Seattle held an opponent to 10 points. Defensively, they look ready to go.
Similarly, the Packers played well on the defensive end and they promise to make it much tougher on opposing offenses this season. They definitely got to Russell Wilson and bothered him a little bit. Russell Wilson stated, “although they won the game, the disappointing part is the turnovers.” “I can never do that. That’s the main focus.”
