It seems to be the annual Peyton Manning comedy show, not just the NFL Pro Bowl.
On Tuesday night, the Broncos quarterback, 12-time all-star and quick witted spoke to both the AFC and NFC squads before practice, which was to commence on Wednesday. He made an emotional plea to the room to make the Pro Bowl relevant by playing hard, and then, in customary Manning fashion, audibled into his bit.
"Peyton Manning holds the record with nine interceptions in the Pro Bowl,” slyly remarked the 36-year-old quarterback in third person. “I want to thank PR for looking that up for me. I want to keep that record. So on Sunday, (NFC cornerbacks Charles) Tillman, (Tim) Jennings, (Patrick) Peterson, look out; I'm going to throw it every time."
Cue the laugh track.
"A little announcement here -- pool volleyball, Wednesday, 3 p.m. AFC quarterbacks vs. NFC quarterbacks,” said Manning. “Each team gets a 'need' player, and I'm in charge of picking this player for both teams. AFC, we get J.J. Watt (6’ 5” defensive lineman). The NFC gets Leon Washington (5’ 8” kick return specialist)."
Manning has made his name with precision passing and clutch leadership that earned his so many trips to Hawaii, but it may be the one-liners that him coming back for more.
