Last week, all eyes were on the Detroit Lions as they took on Johnny Manziel and associates to open the preseason. This week, the Lions face the Oakland Raiders, who have... players, I presume. As such, maybe this game isn't going to set the world on fire, but it is Detroit Lions preseason football. I mean, yes, the game is on at 10:00 at night on Friday, and the game doesn't count for anything, but, hey, maybe tune in?

I imagine the starters will see more time this week, which is good for viewers but bad for people worried about injuries. However, they do need to get some reps. Matthew Stafford needs to throw the ball to Golden Tate some, and ideally Eric Ebron some. Beyond that, though, it will be more of the George Winn show, and all eyes will be on Nate Freese. Can he keep his edge in the kicking battle?

The Raiders may have the worst roster in the NFL. It's certainly up there, or rather down there. They added their own rookie quarterback in Derek Carr, and Khalil Mack should be good, but they shouldn't really challenge the Lions too much, including the backups. We probably won't get much of a sense of the defense. I don't know if the secondary will be challenged. Oh well. It's preseason. Guys will get reps and see the field and that will be good.

The third preseason game is when we will really get to see the starters, but this game will look more like a regular season game than the opener. For now, I'm still just waiting for the regular season, as I want to see the offensive and defensive schemes in full flight. Dan Orlovsky against Oakland's backup defense on a field that has a baseball diamond on it just doesn't fill me with enthusiasm.
