NFL Network ranks Champ Bailey No. 48 of current players

The first four weeks of NFL Network’s Top 100 Players of 2011 may have been a bit dull for Broncos fans, but the past two weeks have given them a reason to watch.

First wide receiver Brandon Lloyd came in at No. 58, ranking ahead of former Broncos receiver Brandon Marshall, and this week cornerback Champ Bailey came in 10 spots higher at No. 48.

“You talk about some of the top defensive backs in the league, there hasn’t been a conversation that he hasn’t been mentioned in,” said Bengals wide receiver Terrell Owens, who introduced Bailey on the program.

While Lloyd’s inclusion on the list caused some debate, there is no doubt Bailey belongs on the list.

In Bailey’s 12 seasons, he’s been named to 10 Pro Bowls – a record for cornerbacks – and his 48 career interceptions rank him third amongst active players.

“This guy is very crafty, very smart. When you’re facing him you having to bring your ‘A’ game,” Owens said.

Bailey has also been named All Pro six times and made his trade to Denver before the 2004 season for running back Clinton Portis look lopsided in the Broncos’ favor.

Bailey was the second cornerback on the Top 100 list, coming in six spots ahead of Eagles cornerback Asante Samuel.

“To have a name like Champ kind of says it all,” Owens said.
