The New Orleans Saints have been doing everything they possibly can to get under the salary cap this offseason. That is greatly needed because some new players need to be signed, and rookies will have to get their money after April as well. With that being said, the first day of the new NFL year was on Tuesday, March 12, 2013, and the Saints made some moves to help the cap including restructuring some contracts and releasing some players.
First of all, a number of Saints' players have restructured their contracts this offseason, and that will greatly help the salary cap for the team. The latest players to help out are defensive end Will Smith and linebacker Jonathan Vilma.
It was announced on Tuesday afternoon that both players had agreed to restructure their deals to remain in New Orleans. The new deals for Vilma and Smith will end up saving the Saints $11 million in cap space for the 2013 season.
The Saints will be saving another $1.9 million in salary cap space with the release of linebacker Will Herring. The veteran linebacker signed with the Saints back in 2011 after spending a few years with the Seattle Seahawks.
Other moves made on Tuesday included the Saints losing two players.
Back-up quarterback Chase Daniel signed a three year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs and offensive tackle Jermon Bushrod signed with the Chicago Bears. Bushrod's deal is for five years.
