NFL free agency has officially begun for the 2013 year, and the New Orleans Saints quickly lost two longtime players. Backup quarterback Chase Daniel has reportedly reached a deal to head to the Kansas City Chiefs. Also, on the offensive side of things, left tackle Jermon Bushrod has signed with the Chicago Bears. Both of these moves came on Tuesday, March 12, 2013.
Daniel has reportedly reached a three-year deal with the Chiefs. Bushrod is said to have gotten a five-year contract from the Bears worth $35.965 million with $17.715 guaranteed.
Daniel is a former undrafted free agent out of Missouri that has spent the last three seasons with the New Orleans Saints backing up Drew Brees. The Saints are happy for their former teammate.
"Congrats to my guy @ChaseDaniel," defensive end Will Smith said.
The Saints now have only have one quarterback on the roster and that is Brees. Daniel joins new Chiefs' quarterback Alex Smith on the roster and Matt Cassel, who will likely be released.
Bushrod said that he never really considered re-signing with the Saints and is happy to join up again with former Saints offensive line coach Aaron Kromer.
"It's crazy but it had to be done," Bushrod said. "This whole process has been bittersweet. My heart is in New Orleans. I'm going to get married in New Orleans. I had my baby in New Orleans. But at the end of the day, I had to make the best move and this was it. I couldn't really wait around, and they (the Saints) knew that."
Bushrod was a four-year starter with the Saints and had just made the Pro Bowl this past season.
