When we take a look at the OG prospects for the 2010 draft we come to the sudden realization that most of these prospects will be picked in the middle rounds of the 2010 NFL Draft. What we have here is one player worthy of a first round pick, one or two worthy of the second, and the rest projecting out as third round picks or lower.
This is not to say these kids do not have talent, it is just the way the 2010 draft has shaken out. With all that being said here are the top ten OG prospects for the 2010 NFL Draft:
1. Mike Iupati, Idaho- We are going to hear this a lot, that NFL teams think he would look better at OT, or even DT. However all his starts in college game at the LG position. He can play multiple positions and he is a great value pick for teams in the first round.
2. Jon Asamoah, Illinois- He may be the best pass blocker in this draft. While he played RG in school, he has all the skills to switch over, and play LG. Look fro the Detroit Lions to take a strong look at him early in the second round.
3. Mike Johnson, Alabama- Versatility is the name of his game. He played all four O line positions in school, and is a great third round pick for a team needing O line depth.
4. Mitch Petrus, Arkansas- He plays the position with a lot of tenacity. He could stand to ass some weight, and he is a converted Tight End.
5. Brandon Carter, Texas Tech- Scouts will be wary of him since a suspension for yelling at Tech Coach Mike Leach. However he is a little more raw and is a development project
6. John Jerry, Mississippi- He projects out as a RG, and is the brother of Atlanta Falcon DT Peria Jerry. At 6-5 332 pounds he has the size NFL teams are looking for, and is pretty agile for a big guy
7. Marshal Newhouse, TCU- He played LT for the Horned Frogs, but NFL teams may want to move him inside to make better use of his length. He played all four O line positions at the East-West Shrine game
8. Sergio Render, Virginia Tech- He is a four year starter with experience at both Guard positions. Scouts will want to insure they have an accurate assessment of him since he was not initially invite to the Scouting Combine
9. Zane Beadles, Utah- His experience is at Tackle, but NFL teams will want to move him inside to take advantage of his size and athleticism. The fact that he can play multiple positions adds to his draft day value
10. Shawn Lauvao, Arizona State- He was converted into a LT in school, but his body type is that of an NFL guard. Moving him inside, and allowing him to use his short arms and toughness seems to be the way to take advantage of his skill set.
