With the sudden departure of the General Manger, in the middle of NFL Free Agency, and NFL Draft preparation, anything could happen with their 2010 NFL Draft. While we do not exactly know what will happen in this power vacuum, we can assume that Head Coach Mike Singletary will gain more power within the organization.
What that means is we can expect the Niners to be targeting Singletary kinds of players. Safety Taylor Mays fits that bill, and reminds 49ers fans of one Ronnie Lott. With two picks in the first round, they are in an ideal position to address two of their primary needs.
There seems to be little doubt that the Niners will use one of their first round picks on OT Trent Williams. Williams has experience at both OT tackles spots, and looks to be able to step in and start at RT from day one. That is something the Niners could use, and picking Williams with the 13th or the 16th pick is a solid move.
The Niners other pick must be used to address concerns in the Defensive secondary. The Niners 2009 defense ranked 21st against the pass, the Niners CB ranks have been depleted by age and injury, and although Shwantae Spencer was solid there, they need a dynamic presence at CB.
At the 13th or maybe even the 16th pick the Niners will have to make a decision about Florida CB Joe Haden. His stock has fallen somewhat, but it seems that he would be a nice fit with the Niners. I think, we will know who has the power in this organization if they pick Haden over Mays. Mays would likely be the guy Singletary would want to add, while others may be arguing for Haden. Either would fill the need to upgrade the defensive secondary.
