NFL Draft 101: What should the San Diego Chargers do with their first round draft pick?

It seems almost a virtual lock that the San Diego Chargers will use the 28th pick to select an RB. What we have to do is try to ferret out which one they have their eyes on.

It seems that Ryan Matthews would best fit their system, but I don’t have a lot of faith that he will be there at 28. In the end it will depend on what the Houston Texans do with their first round draft pick. They could also use a back, and may take Matthews there. However Jahvid Best or Jonathan Dwyer might be a better fit for the Texans, and they may wait till the second round to address that need.

While the Chargers would jump at the chance to draft Matthews, General Manager AJ Smith has been known for a few draft day surprises. He may have his eye on someone completely different and despite the 28th pick he may buck the conventional wisdom out there and take a Toby Gerhart or a Charles Scott.

While RB is definitely their top need, they also need a Nose Tackle. This might be a bit outside the box, but we cannot discount the fact that taking Terence Cody to plug up the middle of their Defensive line is at least a possibility. With the 40th overall pick they stand a very good chance of landing Gerhart or Scott, and adding some muscle to their D line would be sound strategy.

There is no way to say how big a chance there is that the Chargers take a DT with the 28th pick, it is just a chance. Conventional wisdom out there has them going with an RB and at this point that seems to be the best bet.
