NFL Draft 101: What should the Houston Texans do with their first round draft pick?

When we take a look at theHouston Texans primary needs, and factor in how most draft pundits have the first round shaking out, we see that the Texans will have a very good chance to address any one of their three primary needs.

We also have to factor in where this team could use their later round draft picks to address their needs. It seems likely that their need of a RB does not have to be addressed in the first round. If they do select a RB with the 20th overall pick, they will have their pick of the RB litter.

It seems likely that at 20, only Clemson’s CJ Spiller will be off the board. That means that they could select RB Ryan Matthews, or Jonathan Dwyer. However, since many fine RB’s will be available in the second round, such as Anthony Dixon or Toby Gerhart the Texans may choose to use their first round pick to address the hole in thief defensive secondary.

The loss of CB Dunta Robinson in free agency creates an urgent need for their secondary, beyond the depth they needed due to a less than average performance in 2009.

We can make effective arguments for the Texans to select CB Kyle Wilson from Boise State, or FS/CB Earl Thomas from Texas. If Thomas is still on the board at 20, it seems pretty likely that he cold be the Texans’ selection.

We can also make an argument for the Texans to take a DT with this pick. A 4-3 NT type that could anchor the middle of their line. The Texans have used three of their first round picks to address needs along their Defensive line. UCLA’s Brian Price is likely to be on the board at this point, but I don’t see the Texans going the route this year.

In the end the Texans will have to decide which way to go, and either way it seems that they are sitting in a very good spot to add a top tier player to a team that barely missed the 2009 NFL playoffs.
