NFL Draft 101: What should the Bengals do with their first round draft pick?

Depending on how we interpret the Bengals hierarchy of needs, there is probably two ways they will go with the 21st overall pick in this year’s NFL draft.

Their biggest need seems to be at the safety position. On top of that their scouting department seems very high on Taylor Mays. I don’t think there is any question that if he is still on the board at 21 that they will make him their selection.

While draft pundits are higher on Earl Thomas, it does not seem likely that he will be there. It seems if he falls this far, that the Houston Texans would jump at the chance to add a home state kid to the roster with the 20th pick.

The other glaring need of this team is a TE to help them stretch the field, but it doesn’t seem likely that they will have to spend the 21st overall pick on that need. They have Chase Coffman on the roster, but may want to add talent at this position in the later rounds of the draft.

Beyond safety there is no glaring need on this team, so the Bengals could adopt a best player available stance in this draft. That could mean, they select Idaho Guard Mike Iupati if he falls to them. While Bobbie Williams has been solid, he will turn 34 this September.

The way the 2010 NFL Draft seems to be shaking out, the Bengals will really have a decision of three players, two if Iupati is selected before they get the chance to.
