NFL Draft 101: What are the Minnesota Vikings needs heading into 2010?

The Minnesota Vikings are going to have to prepare for the day when Brett Favre actually retires, and means it. That day will most likely not come in 2010 but they need to prepare themselves for that eventuality. With the 30th pick in the first round, it seems like a perfect opportunity to take a young QB let him mentor under Favre and Tavaris Jackson and see what is what down the road.

It logical, it makes sense, and sometimes draft day isn’t about the current season, it is about the long term future of an organization. The Vikings have had trouble developing QB’s in the past, relying instead on aging free agents. They may continue that practice, but they may decide that QB is their most significant of needs. There more immediate need s would include safety. Tyrell Jackson and Madieu Williams are ok, but ok is not good enough. They could use an infusion of young talent here.

Next they could use some healthy bodies at CB. Both starters ended the 2009 season with injuries. It may be time for the Vikes to bring in fresh faces at this spot as well.

On top of the list of secondary needs is some talent on the left side of the offensive line. A big time prospect that projects as a LT or a smash mouth LG would be nice, and if they find themselves in a position to grab they should. They have young starters on the right side, but the time is coming where the left side will need an upgrade.

Their last significant need would be a running back to help Adrian Peterson to shoulder the load, maybe a change of pace kind of guy. The point here is this is a two back league, and Peterson’s game leaves his prone to injury. I don’t want to mention his difficulties holding onto the ball, but that is also a concern.
