NFL Draft 101: What are the Houston Texans needs heading into 2010?

The Houston Texans stat line from 2009 suggest that it is that time for the Texans to spend their first round draft pick on a top level running back. They ranked 30th in rushing yards per game with 92.2, and 31st in yards per carry.

While that seems to speak to their need for a top tier RB, it could also point to the need for some beef on the offensive line. They did give up 25 sacks in 2009, so RB and OG would have to be listed as their two primary needs.

Since they feel like a team one or two pieces away from a deep playoff run, their management is going to have to decide which of those pieces they can add via the draft. They have been hit or miss in their drafts since entering the league in 2000, but stand a real shot at addressing their needs with the picks they have in April’s draft.

Since Dunta Robinson was lost in free agency we can place CB on their list of primary needs. That means their management have to decide how to go abut addressing their primary needs of OG, RB, and CB.

More help in the defensive secondary seems to rank high among their secondary needs. This team gave up 3,674 passing yards in 2009, and that leads us to yet another secondary need of an upgrade n the pass rush.

While they add 29 sacks in 2009, 2007 first round draft pick DT Amobi Okoye, has only registered eight sacks in three years. They could definitely use an upgrade there. More to the point the could use a capable 4-3 nose tackle to cement the middle of their defensive line. Not a huge need, but one that could be addressed in the later rounds of the 2010 NFL Draft.
