Rams needs heading into 2010

The work is just beginning on what the 2010 St. Louis Rams are going to look like.  Steve Spagnuolo, Billy Devaney, Kevin Demoff and a slew of other coaches and scouts are beginning to go over their lists and figure out what they would like the roster to look like in 2010.  One of the bigger questions that is going to hang over the Rams and the entire NFL this offseason is will there be a salary cap or not?  That will not only effect how much the Rams might want to spend but which players will be available or not with free agency.

2009 was the first step in what is a monumental rebuilding process. When you are trying to salvage a team that went 0-16, it takes a lot of hard work, and a ton of prudent free agent signings and draft picks. Recent events and free agency might dramatically change what the Steelers do in the 2010 NFL Draft. They do not appear to be a team with glaring needs, but could use a few playmakers in the defensive secondary, and could start a youth movement along their offensive and defensvie lines.

With just 28 sacks, and 15 interceptions it seemed the biggest needs on this team was in the defensive secondary and along the defensive line. That was true until the Falcons landed Dunta Robinson and Matt Giordano in free agency. Now the Falcons must work on their pass rush.

The Houston Texans stat line from 2009 suggest that it is that time for the Texans to spend their first round draft pick on a top level running back. They ranked 30th in rushing yards per game with 92.2, and 31st in yards per carry.

This is a tough one to ferret out. The Bengals still have 10 unrestricted free agents at multiple positions, so needs could change due to who they can resign, and who they want to resign.

There seems little doubt the New England Patriots have to fix the defensive front seven. They need depth at the NT position, they need t o find a replacement for Richard Seymour, and they need to fix a pass rush, and improve the run defense.

It seems there is one prevailing need for this team, and that is to rebuild the offensive line to protect QB Aaron Rodgers better. This team gave up 51 sacks in the regular season in2009, and five more in the playoff game against the Arizona Cardinals a team that had little to no pass rush for the outside edge.

The Philadelphia Eagles feel like a team in transition. They window of opportunity to win with QB Donovan McNabb has closed, and this team will move on with young QB Kevin Kolb. While that is a big change, it does not necessarily affect what the team needs to win. They may need to pick up another back up QB type, but essentially their needs remain the same.

It seemed that the number one need of this team heading into 2010 was at WR, but after the signing of Donte Stallworth and the trade for Anquan Boldin we can hardly say that anymore. They feel like a team that still needs another WR option, but that will now become a secondary need.

It always surprises me how fast Championship caliber sports teams can fall apart. It wasn’t that long ago that the Cardinals were in the Super Bowl, now the feel like thy have slipped back to the mediocrity that has plagued this team throughout its long history.

It is somewhat hard to ranks the Dallas Cowboys needs. They have several areas that are concerning, but some of that is not immediate. They could use a new starter at LT given the release of Flozell Adams, and that seems to be the area of most concern.

The LT era of the San Diego Chargers is over and the shots RB all the way to the top of their primary needs. They need a back to pair with Darren Sproles. What kind of back seems to be the question, but RB is their primary need without a doubt.

At the end of the 2009 season the New York Jets felt like a team that was pretty close to contending for a Super Bowl. During this off season, they have added a lot of pieces. They hope those pieces get them to the Super Bowl.

The Minnesota Vikings are going to have to prepare for the day when Brett Favre actually retires, and means it. That day will most likely not come in 2010 but they need to prepare themselves for that eventuality. With the 20th pick in the first round, it seems like a perfect opportunity to take a young QB let him mentor under Favre and Tavaris Jackson and see what is what down the road.
