NFL championship hiring tips – win some and learn some

Did you watch Pro Bowl 2011? If so, you’ll probably watch Super Bowl XLV this Sunday, February 6, 2011 at 6:30pm EST. While you are watching, I encourage you to think about the many correlations between the NFL draft process and best practices for hiring top talent for your organization. If you are in the search for career progression it would be to your advantage to know what companies need to do to find and retain ‘superstars’.

I picked up a book entitled, “Hiring Secrets of the NFL – How Your Company Can Select Talent Like a Champion” by Isaac Cheifetz.  Although I was seeking knowledge to perfect interviewing skills in my field of executive search, it dawned on me that candidates could also benefit by understanding exactly what corporations scout for to hire top talent.

Mr. Cheifetz studies the NFL draft and creates a playbook of rules to deliver world-class team of business performers. He provides sports and business metaphors to increase the odds of teamwork, improve strategic line ups and highlights ‘sportsmanlike’ character.

Cheryl Ayers, Business Development Executive at IMPACT Group, based in Atlanta, agrees with the author.  “As a career coach, I often follow the techniques of lead coaches of several team sports, especially football.” Ayers adds, “World-class business performance will not allow temperamental behavior.  A ‘superstar’ that is personally productive but organizationally destructive cannot be tolerated.”

This, of course, reminds me of a song. My new favorite artist is Jason Mraz who wrote and sings the song,“I’m Yours”.  Here’s an excerpt of the lyrics that I think applies to this book, an employer and a job seeker.

“Well open up your mind and see like me

Open up your plans and darn you’re free

I reckon it’s again my turn

To win some or learn some”

Be a winner! Check out this book to sign up unsurpassed talent and advance and keep hold of the champions for your organization.
