A total of 32 compensatory drat picks have been awarded to 16 teams for the 2013 NFL draft. Teams earn compensatory picks by a complicated formula of free agents lost compared to free agents gained.

Under the rules for compensatory draft selections, a team losing more or better compensatory free agents than it acquires in the previous year is eligible to receive compensatory draft picks.The number of picks a team receives equals the net loss of compensatory free agents up to a maximum of four. The 32 compensatory choices announced today will supplement the 222 choices in the seven rounds of the 2013 NFL Draft.
The Houston Texans, Kansas City Chiefs, and Tennessee Titans have been given extra draft picks at the bottom of round three.
The Baltimore Ravens, San Francisco 49ers, Detroit Lions, and Atlanta Falcons have been given compensatory selections at the bottom of the fourth round.
The Miami Dolphins, Green Bay Packers, and the Ravens have been given selections at the bottom of the fifth round.
The Texans, Titans, Ravens, Chiefs, Oakland Raiders, and Pittsburgh Steelers have been awarded picks at the end of the sixth round.
The Philadelphia Eagles, Cincinnati Bengals, Seattle Seahawks (twice), Falcons (twice), Lions, 49ers, Ravens, Titans, Falcons (again), Dolphins, Bengals, 49ers, New York Giants, and Indianapolis Colts have all been given picks and the end of the seventh round.
NFL teams covet compensatory draft picks as they give teams an extra shot at adding prospective players to the roster. They are also very useful trade bait to get draft day trades done. However, those teams that draft well can find very good talent with their extra picks. The New Orleans Saints found WR Marques Colston with a compensatory draft pick in the seventh round of the 2006 NFL draft.
