NFL 2010 Season Preview: AFC North

AFC North

Can Terrell Owens and Chad Ochocinco survive in the same environment? Can Carson Palmer provide enough receptions for those players to keep them both happy? Those are just two of the questions facing the Cincinnati Bengals this season as they now have one of the most extravagant and flamboyant wide receiver tandems in NFL history. Let's not forget that Cedric Benson was resurrected his career coming out of the backfield for the Bengals and that means a running game that works which also means one that won't call for Palmer to throw nearly as much. The endzone celebrations are sure to begin early in the season, but it may not be too long before the fireworks begin in a big way.

The Cleveland Browns don't only have not much to look forward to, but they have to play in the same division as the Bengals, Ravens, and Steelers. Maybe it's just this writer, but there have to be others out there wondering how the Browns came upon their decision to "upgrade" their quarterback position. Getting rid of two quality upstarts in Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn for a declining Jake Delhomme and career back-up Seneca Wallace is extremely confusing. Perhaps they're hoping that both of them can help train rookie Colt McCoy how to play in the NFL because otherwise this season is going to be a complete and total wash.

"Big" Ben Roethlisberger is going to be sitting on the sidelines for the first four and possibly six games of the season. Surviving this stretch is extremely crucial to the entire season of the Pittsburgh Steelers, but it could also raise some questions. Byron Leftwich and Dennis Dixon are expected to split snaps, but Leftwich will probably end up in the starter's spot due more so to his veteran experience. What if Roethlisberger's suspension is up and the Steelers are 5-1 or 4-2? Would Mike Tomlin really yank a quarterback that started out the season so well? We've seen how the Steelers do though when one of their big names is out and the evidence is how poorly they played when Troy Polamalu was on the shelf last season. If they do the same this year with Big Ben on the sidelines then it may be too late by the time he returns.

Ray Lewis is not getting any younger, but he sure doesn't seem to be losing a step in his game. Lewis leads another phenomenal Baltimore Ravens' defense into the 2010 season that could see them take the AFC North crown. Should Ed Reed be healthy enough to come back early then you can bet this defense will stand firm and shut down any offense that stands before them. Joe Flacco is not an elite quarterback in the NFL, but he's on his way to becoming one. He has the talent in himself and surrounding him to run up the score and make the work of his defense look that much better. Having a bowling ball of a running back like Ray Rice lining up behind you doesn't hurt either. The suspension of Roethlisberger could really help the Ravens pull ahead in the division early and they have the ability to hold onto a lead late into the season.

Another nice preview! I agree with assessment of Browns. While Delhomme has had a nice preseason, he is certainly NOT the answer there, and McCoy is going to need some time..

I think if the egos stay in check, Cincinnati can dominate this season. Oh yeah, and Carson needs to quit throwing the ball like a rookie...

For m, I like for Cincy to win the AFC North Title and try to win it all this year. They need all the brakes they can before facing Baltimore and Pittsburgh. Gl to the who deys!
