Next iPhone due for a 5MP camera upgrade

The iPhone 3GS

The first details of the next generation iPhone are beginning to leak out, and it looks like the iPhone is going to get an upgraded camera. OmniVision, the company that provides the 3.2 MP sensors for the iPhone 3GS, is expected to provide a 5 MP camera for the next generation iPhone. OmniVision is due to ship as high as 45 million units, which will no doubt include the iPod as well as the iPhone.

An upgraded camera is to be expected as Apple puts some more polish on an already very well-rounded smartphone. The real question might just be where there camera will be mounted. Some iPhone users have been calling for a display-side camera to make video conferencing possible.

Another rumor about the next generation iPhone surfaced in November when a report by OTR Global cited that Apple would upgrade the iPhone's chipset to support both AT&T's and Verizon's network. This rumor was aided by a report from Northeast Securities that speculated Apple would launch a Verizon-capable iPhone by summer 2010.

Of course, rumors tend to fall flat more often than not. The much-hyped video projector for the next generation iPhont Touch never materialized, which is sad when you consider what the Wearable Gestural Interface could provide. Perhaps this is due for the next iPhone?
