The Growing Stage, The Children’s Theatre of New Jersey, located in the Historic Palace Theatre on Route 183 in Netcong, New Jersey is proud to present the Studio Series Presentation of THE ODYSSEY from March 21st through March 30th with performances Friday evenings at 7:30 PM, Saturday and Sunday matinees at 4:00 PM.

Produced at the John F. Kennedy Center and nationally applauded in professional productions, THE ODYSSEY is an action-filled story based on Homer’s classic book and dramatized by Gregory A. Falls and Kurt Beattie, THE ODYSSEY is fast-moving, entertaining theatre, while remaining faithful to the poetic original. Danny Campos (photo right), actor and senior teaching artist of The Growing Stage is the director for this production.

THE ODYSSEY opens as the goddess Athena introduces the story of Odysseus’s epic journey home from the Trojan War, we see his beautiful wife, Penelope, fending off impatient, would-be suitors. Athena, disguised as an old man, brings news of Odysseus’s journey as the play’s action segues to his fanciful adventure. Captain Odysseus, brave and determined as his sailors are cowardly, cleverly defeats the man-eating, one-eyed Cyclops, then rescues his men from the sorceress, Circe’s spell. Next, he braves the River Styx and resists the hypnotizing song of the Twin Sirens, fainting from exhaustion. While Odysseus sleeps, his famished men embark upon a nearby shore to kill a cow for food. It is one of Apollo’s golden cows, and thus offended, the god implores Zeus to punish the men.

Odysseus and his sailors are swept into a storm-tossed sea. Meanwhile, Penelope’s suitors accept a challenge: He who strings Odysseus’s bow and shoots an arrow through the axes wins Penelope’s hand. Only one man succeeds, none other than the returned Odysseus himself, disguised. Odysseus and son, Telemachus, are attacked by the suitors, whom they quickly defeat. Athena declares the end to all violence and the end of this Odyssey. This production is recommended for ages 8 and up.

THE ODYSSEY is an all youth production featuring 22 young performers. This production is a part of our Studio Presentation Series. This series initiated in the fall of 2009 has succeeded in engaging both patrons and artists. Targeted for specific-aged audiences rather than the wide-reaching family fare of the Main Stage, the series provides community artists with a unique opportunity to participate in the creative process of “trying out” new, more experimental works under the direction of our professional artists. This program allows our company to both cultivate new talent and challenge audiences.

Tickets for THE ODYSSEY are $12 General Admission, with group rates available. Tickets can be purchased by calling the TGS Box Office at (973) 347-4946 or visiting The Growing Stage – The Children’s Theatre of New Jersey programs are made possible, in part, by funding from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, and contributions from numerous corporations, foundations, and individuals.
