Newtown braces for release of 911 calls from day of Conn. school massacre

Almost one year to the day after Adam Lanza walked into an elementary school in Newtown, Conn. and opened fire on children and teachers, residents of the still mourning town are once again bracing for a new round of potential heartache as multiple 911 calls are set to be released, reports the Chicago Tribune on Dec. 4.

Seven calls totaling nearly a half-hour of audio are set to be released today. The recordings capture the moments when Lanza began firing; gunshots can be heard in some of the calls. The Dec. 14, 2012 shooting – one of the worst mass shootings in U.S. history – left 20 children and six adults dead inside of the Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Newtown officials initially attempted to block the release of the tapes, but a judge ordered that the town must comply with the state’s Freedom of Information Commission and release the audio.

On Tuesday, Newtown School Superintendent John Reed personally sent out emails to parents to advise them of the fact the recordings would be released and to forewarn them that the audio may serve as an “emotional trigger.”

The calls, made to Newtown, Connecticut police, are scheduled to be made available to the media via CDs at 2 p.m. Wednesday. Stay here for a link to the audio recordings when they are made available.

UPDATE: The audio has now been released. A related article posted today by Examiner carries a link to the recordings.
