Friday’s rainfall has resulted in the cancellation of Newton Abbot due to a waterlogged track. Clerk of the course Jason Loosemore called an 11:30 a.m. inspection on Saturday but decided horse racing conditions for Monday’s meeting were unsuitable after heavy rain fell on the area the previous night.
"We had a deluge last night, as lots of places in the south west did, and that has left us waterlogged," said Loosemore. The Met Office continues to forecast showers in southern and north western England through the weekend, Monday, and beyond. Its official weather prediction for Monday states: “Showery outbreaks of rain moving south across England and Wales, some heavy bursts possible in the east at first, generally brighter later. Drier across Scotland.”
Loosemore added: "The forecast is for a day of overcast weather with occasional showers and we would need a good few days of dry weather with a stiff breeze and warm sunshine to help. We're not forecast that and we don't have the time to dry out, so we have abandoned the meeting."
On July 22, Newton Abbot will host Family Day with the first horse race starting at 2:25 p.m. with the last meeting scheduled for 5:45 p.m.
