The United States has 50 states. This isn't something that is debatable, it's just a fact. Would the United States ever add a 51st state? It's possible, but when and where it could happen is an open question. However, Republican presidential candidate and former Speaker of the House, Newt Gingrich, has great plans to add a 51st state to the union, but it might take a while to visit.
Newt Gingrich: “At one point early in my career, I introduced the Northwest Ordinance for Space...I said when we got, I think the number is 13,000, when we have 13,000 Americans living on the moon, they can petition to become a state.”
Newt Gingrich: “By the end of my second term, we will have the first permanent base on the moon and it will be American"
Gingrich is a smart man who knows how to play to a crowd. It was never more evident than when Gingrich complained that the crowd wasn't allowed to applaud during the last debate. Gingrich was playing to a Florida crowd who recently witnesses the end of their space program for the time being. To say that you could not only create a 51st state, but do it in outer space should be a statement that even the most loyal Gingrich supporters find a bit "out of this world."
