Newt Gingrich: 'Marriage is between a man and woman'

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich is standing strong in anti-gay marriage views. The former GOP presidential candidate who has no problem speaking his mind feels that the definition of marriage will not change in his mind no matter what politicians decide. Gingrich told CNN on Friday in reaction to Sen. Rob Portman's change in heart when it comes to same-sex marriage, that marriage is "between a man and woman".

Gingrich stands behind his religious views and says his stance has not evolved.

"I believe as the Bible teaches, marriage is between a man and woman. I actually think that marriage is between a man and a woman no matter what politicians decide. I don't think they have the power to change what is a religiously inspired definition."

Newt Gingrich also said that the issue of same-sex marriage will add complications in the next few years throughout the country as some states legalize same-sex marriage while others do not. He says the practical legalities will outweigh moral principles.

As far as Portman's decision to support same-sex marriage, Gingrich said he will not second guess his old personal friend because in the end he decided to support and choose his son's happiness over his own principles.

"I'm not going to second guess Rob Portman. He's an old personal friend. I think when you have somebody in your immediate family who comes in, you have three choices: You can say, 'I believe my principles so much, I'm kicking you out'. you can day, 'I still believe in my principles, but I love you'. Or you can say, 'Gee, I love you so much I'm changing my principles."

Gingrich feels Portman's sudden change in support of same-sex marriage will not change the fact, in his opinion, that marriage will always be defined as between a man and woman.

But if the shoe was on Gingrich's foot and his child or family member came out as gay to him, would he put parenting or family support before politics? or is there no chance of evolution on this particular issue for Newt Gingrich?

One thing is for sure. Sen. Rob Portman's decision was one of courage and although there have been mixed reactions regarding support for same-sex marriage, politicians of all parties should be inspired by his act of choosing human emotions over his political views.
