A news report that is quickly spreading nationwide for its unusual aspects is also raising suspicions. On Jan. 17, 2013, the Christian Post reported on the curious case that stems from Cantonment, Florida in Escambia County. According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), a fatality occurred on Jan. 14, 2013, at 10:20 a.m., when couple James W. Campbell, 68 and Iris H. Fortner, 56, returned in their vehicle to their home at Desoto Road. Campbell exited the running vehicle in order to open the gates to the property, when reports say Fortner opened a door that the family dog ran through. The large-sized, boxer bulldog reportedly pressed the accelerator, causing the car to run over Campbell. You may read an account from News Herald here. While FHP is investigating the death, Fortner was not arrested or charged. Still, some have voiced concerns through online, social-media sites that the case sounds suspicious.
On the social-media site North Escambia, local residents shared their initial response to the tragedy and discussed their personal interactions with Campbell (who was known to friends as “Bo”), as well as offered prayers of support for Fortner. Some, however, expressed belief that the story sounds suspicious. Those using the North Escambia blog aren’t the only ones to express their opinions regarding the unlikelihood of a dog pressing a van’s accelerator and causing a fatality.
What do you think of the story? Do you think it is plausible or do you join those who feel it is suspicious? The investigation is ongoing and at this point, no arrests or official statement that foul play was involved have been made.
Stay tuned as we will keep you updated on this case as the investigation proceeds.
