NEWS FLASH! Lt. Gov. nominee Cohen will quit ticket under Dem pressure

As recently as this morning’s national headlines, the Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor, Scott Lee Cohen, insisted that he has “no intention of stepping down.”  But you will hear an entirely different story on the 10 o’clock news tonight.

Sources tell me the embattled Cohen is looking for an easy way out, a face-saving twist to end the misery he has been in since revelations this week – on the heels of his surprise victory in Tuesday’s primary election – of his alleged wife abuse, extra marital affairs and failure to pay child support. (I could go on, but give the guy a little break. Enough is enough.)

Apparently yielding to pressure – that may have come from as high as the White House – Cohen is expected to take the advice of Gov. Pat Quinn, U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin, Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan, a phalanx of other Democratic Party leaders and numerous newspaper editorials. He will – perhaps as early as tonight, resign from the Democratic ticket.

Madigan, the most popular elected official in Illinois today, had been mum concerning Cohen's problems, until just before 6 p.m. today when she posted a statement on her Facebook page, saying, It is clear (Cohen) is unfit to hold public office."

Stay tuned.
