The legendary Newport Folk Festival, July 25-27, didn’t offer a lineup when tickets went on sale earlier this year. Still, the dates quickly sold out.

The faith that festivarians had in the the event’s organizers will pay off when Jack White, Mavis Staples, Ryan Adams, Jeff Tweedy, Robert Hunter, Jenny Lewis, Conor Oberst, Kurt Vile, Nickel Creek, Jimmy Cliff, Band of Horses, Dawes, Lucero, The Devil Makes Three, Lake Street Drive, Shovels & Rope, Pegi Young & the Survivors, Trampled By Turtles, Reignwolf, Houndmouth, J. Roddy Walston & the Business, The Milk Carton Kids, Caitlin Rose, Hozier and others play this weekend at Fort Adams State Park.

With this year’s group of artists, the fest once again balances folk and roots artists with a nod to indie and rock acts.

A major coup is scheduling singer/songwriter and Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter. Following a nearly decade long absence from the stage, he took part in a brief east coast tour last fall and also received the Lifetime Achievement award at the Americana Awards.

For those who want even more live music after the daily schedule, Deer Tick headlines its annual Newport Folk Festival after parties at Newport, Rhode Island‘s Blues Cafe.

On Friday Deer Tick will be joined by special guest Hamilton Leithauser with openers Robert Ellis and Bears Den. The next night the band headlines with opening acts Joe Pug, Ages and Ages and T. Hardy Morris & The Hard Knocks. Finally, on Sunday Deer Tick will end the run with special guests Trampled By Turtles and Ben Nichols of Lucero and Caitlin Rose opening.

For those who cannot make the 55th annual event, NPR has you covered.

On the fest’s opening day it will broadcast a live audio stream of Ryan Adams' set from the festival's main stage.

Over the rest of the weekend, the national public radio station will record much of the main-stage lineup online and tweet photos and observations from the festival grounds.
