As a huge fan of traditional Reese's peanut butter cups, it is disappointing to see how much sugar and additives are added to the mass produced chocolates out there. If you enjoy a good chocolate filled cup and want to feel better about what you're consuming then take a look at the offerings of Newman's Own.
Over the years the people at Newman's have expanded on their vast line of consumables from their large stable of salad dressing to beverages and instant popcorn. Well now they even have their own chocolate including chocolate filled cups. I say filled cups because in the search for peanut butter cups I was pleasantly surprised to see Newman's also makes mint cream filled chocolate cups.
The peanut butter cups used a dark chocolate shell which lends a nice hint of bitter sweetness to the creamy saltiness of the smooth peanut butter. The peanut butter was creamier and smoother than your usual Reese which helps the chocolate and filling blend together nicely with each bite.
The mint cream cups also used dark chocolate shells and were an even better treat. I expected the filling to be thick and very minty like a York's peppermint patty however it was quite different. The cream filling was much thinner and smoother; thick a slightly thicker cherry cordial filling. It has a nice green color to evoke mint and tasted like it used fresh mint while not tasting medicinal.
You can find these treats at any local market with a decent organic food section, and by decent I mean a section large that one aisle or a section of an aisle (I'm talking to you Riggs Road Giant). Each pack of Newman's Own chocolate cups come with 3 cups and they retail for $1.99. Get yours now and leave some comments with your impressions.
