You could almost hear the wails across the nation as courageous Valerie Harper was skillfully sashayed off the dance floor by host Tom Bergen on the October 7 episode of "Dancing with the Stars." And as People magazine reported on October 8, she managed to send her message to America.
"It has been absolutely wonderful, completely unique, like nothing else in the world," said the 74-year-old Valerie. "It's really a great thing to get out and dance!"
Valerie has emphasized throughout her "Dancing" experience that she believes it has health benefits, including weight loss.
"They've forced me to get serious about dieting. Since I'm no longer on steroids, I've dropped 20 pounds, but I'd like to lose another 15. I told the wardrobe supervisor, 'Your job is take six inches off my butt' by choosing "Dancing with the Stars" costumes to hide her excess pounds," Valerie said, according to Contact Music.
Although some questioned whether the excessive exercise required of contestants was safe for a cancer patient, the American Cancer Society has this guideline: “Newer research has shown that exercise is not only safe and possible during cancer treatment, but it can improve how well you function physically and your quality of life.”
In addition to chemotherapy, Valerie is using an Eastern approach to battling her cancer that includes adding holistic teas to her diet, according to her recent NBC documentary.
