A South Carolina Sheriff, Alex Underwood says someone has poisoned his German shepherd. A veterinarian has confirmed that the dog was poisoned.

Underwood says the 19-month-old dog, whom he named A.J., died early Monday.

Underwood who is the county's first African-American sheriff in Chester County, South Carolina had just recently taken the oath of office.

Underwood thinks someone poisoned the dog during the weekend.

He says he left the dog in the yard during Chester's Martin Luther King parade. He says shortly after he returned, the dog began acting oddly and died early Monday morning.

The sheriff says there are possible suspects but he would not elaborate. The loss was devastating to the newly elected law enforcement official. An investigation into the dog’s death is ongoing.
